Planning on heading down to the River’s Source Whitewater Symposium, at the River Dart Country Park, this weekend, then the CKUK Team have some cool workshops going on… and we thought you might want to know a bit more about what you’ll get to do!

Want to write great articles about your whitewater adventures? Then CKUK’s Assistant Editor Seth will be running just the work shop for you, a how to write great articles and get published workshop on Saturday afternoon again in the Music Room in the main house. Assisting Seth will be long term CKUK contributor The FLOATER… Yep, you can actually get to meet the man behind 11 years of cutting edge comment from the boat shed!

On the Saturday night we’ll be holding a reader’s forum too, so come along, enjoy a drink on us and share your feedback, comments and ideas.

Tom Laws and Andrew Butler, along with Jay Smith and Seth from CKUK have got a clinic/session on Sunday morning.
We have some pimp new gear from LowePro (www.lowepro.com) and Watershed to have a play with, as well as the opportunity to try a whole load of different things….

- What do the buttons do on my new camera? Straightforward ideas to help you get the best out of the settings and go “beyond auto”.

- Making your photos special with a few top tips

- Flash, aha – the opportunity to experiment with off camera flash and other exciting lighting solutions.

With Tom, Jay and Seth’s experience across the globe poking cameras at stuff we can tailor the course to suit what YOU want to do! We will of course not be chatting about it, but getting out and DOING it!

Andrew will also be offering tips for the GoPro (and other head cams) to go beyond the rain spotted blurry footage, as well as loads of simple ideas to get far more from your GoPro. “Beyond the head cam”. Again Andrew will be bringing a range of toys down with him for you to have a go with. We will also have some laptops and macs on hand to play with any footage or snaps.

We’ll be running a photo/video comp over the weekend to and you could win some fantastic prizes courtesy of LowePro (www.lowepro.com )

The price? Well, how about FREE? You’d be mad not to sign up.

We have finalised the Saturday evening line up, and not only do me have a great programme, we also now have a great double bill, two of the BEST designers in the industry with provide the before an dafter Dinner presentations in the Ballroom.

First up is Barney Caulfield from Palm Equipment, will take you behind the scenes of Palm’s development process, giving you a rare insight into the creation, testing and manufacture of some of Palm’s most iconic products. He will also give advice and demonstrations on how to dress for kayaking, where the right gear is essential in determining your comfort, enjoyment and safety out on the river. Barney will greet you in the Ballroom at the River Dart 17:30 to 19:00

After dinner, Graham Mackereth, owner and head designer at Pyranha has been pioneering British kayak design since the mid-70s, has an unrivalled collection of historical canoes and kayaks and an infectious interest in boat design and history.
Graham is joined by Industrial designer at Pyranha Richard Taylor to look back at the beginnings of British whitewater boat design, to the birth of early slalom and fiberglass, reminiscing over some of the iconic designs of our time, the current technology and safety features that go into modern day kayaks, and a look towards the future of British Kayak manufacture. Boat geeks of the UK, this is one not to be missed! Graham will be up 20:30 to 22:00 in the River Dart Country Park’s Ballroom.

PLUS a Palm Competition

As kayakers we are often subject to our heads being immersed in water and can be at risk of developing exotoses (bony growths within the ear canal), which is commonly associated with regular cold water exposure to the ear canals.

On Saturday evening (28th January) at the Rivers Source Symposium, there will be an opportunity for paddlers to have their own custom ear plugs made.
Clare Morgan (Whitewater paddler and Audiologist), kindly supported by Starkey Laboratories has volunteered to run this clinic to raise awareness of this preventable condition and hopefully reduce the incidence of exotoses. Using ear plugs on a regular basis when water exposure is likely can reduce the likelihood of developing this condition.

There will be a charge of £40 for producing the swim plugs and numbers of plugs made on the evening will be limited, so please visit the stand early to save disappointment.

Passionate about boating? Love paddling the Dart? Wish to see our river’s clean and pristine?

In recent months when paddling the Dart, we’ve noticed litter that have been washed down the river, ana also on the river banks at the put-ins and take-outs. Our aim is to spend a day descending the river from Dartmeet to the Buckfast Butterfly Farm, picking up the litter on route. Whilst on the trip we will paddle some of the finest WW the the UK has to offer.

Feel like you want to help & get involved? Sunday 29th January.

What we will do:
· Meet at RDCP for 0930, and arrange shuttles.
· Start at Dartmeet with a rubbish clearance of Dartmeet Car Park
· Paddle down, Landing where nessasary to collect rubbish on both banks and islands
· Get some images of the work being done
· Stop for lunch on the Loop
· Aim to be off water 1530-1600hrs at Buckfast or Staverton
